Just Shocking wins 6 Australian Children’s choice awards

Andy Griffiths has become the first Australian author to win six children’s choice reading awards in one year, smashing his previous record of four children’s choice awards for the highly controversial The Bad Book in 2005.

JUST SHOCKING! won the younger reader’s categories of QLD’s BILBY Award (Books I Love Best Yearly), ACT’s COOL Award (Canberra’s Own Outstanding List), NSW’s KOALA Award (Kids Own Australian Literature Award) NT’s KROC Award (Kids Reading Oz Choice), WA’s WAYRBA Award (West Australian Young Readers’ Book Award) and VIC’s YABBA Award (Young Australians’ Best Book Award).

Each year, young readers in every state vote for the book they have most enjoyed reading that year. Australian children unanimously voted Andy Griffiths as their favourite author for younger readers in 2008.

JUST SHOCKING is the sixth in the ‘JUST’ series of books, first launched in 1997 with JUST TRICKING! Andy Griffiths has now sold over one million copies of his ‘JUST’ books in Australia, taking his total sales worldwide to over four million. His books have now won over 40 Australian children’s choice awards over the last ten years.

Andy Griffiths said, ‘As a child I loved the rambunctious anarchic  humour of Lewis Carroll, Dr Seuss and the Cole’s Funny Picture Books  and with the help of Terry Denton’s demented doodling I am thrilled to have been able to transmit this humour to a whole new generation through the Just series.’

JUST MACBETH: the play! Sept-Oct 2008

‘Riotously funny’ – The Age

‘Inspired silliness’ – Daily Telegraph

‘Irrepressibly irreverent … brilliant fun’ – The Australian

‘Great fun. Great theatre. Surprisingly good Shakespeare, too’ – Herald Sun

‘Exuberantly daft, very clever show’ – The Sun-Herald

‘Children as young as three and four years old were gripped and fully engaged along with teenagers and their teachers, who actually mouthed the words during some of the more famous Shakespearean speeches. Will Shakespeare and Andy Griffiths make a great team!’ – Australian Stage Online

‘Visceral images comic-book style, irreverent references to theatrical convention and wordplay, including a rearrangement of the play’s title, promise mirth aplenty for boys and girls. It is a promise delivered with gusto… it is hard to conceive of a more appropriate production through which to introduce children to the theatre, let alone Shakespeare’ – The Sydney Morning Herald

‘This is a high-energy, madcap production that had the children in the audience spell-bound from start to finish and they weren’t the only ones. Just Macbeth! is a great romp and the actors throw themselves into their roles with genuine delight.’ – The Sunday Herald Sun, Melbourne

Just Macbeth is a great piece of theatre … Griffiths’ genius isn’t just in bringing his anarchic sense of humour to such a heavy work but in the way he integrates the bard’s language into the contemporary play.’ – Drum Media

JUST MACBETH

Bell Shakespeare’s production of Just Macbeth! by Andy Griffiths is a really silly version of Shakespeare’s great big gory tragedy starring Andy, Lisa, Danny and Jen from the JUST series.

And when we say really silly, we mean really REALLY silly as it is performed by six funny but tragic actors and a garden gnome and features a severed head that talks Shakespearean. And when we say really, REALLY silly, we mean really, REALLY, REALLY silly as there are witches and whiz fizz and ghosts and girl germs and weird Elizabethan things like soliloquies and sharp swords and other things beginning with S.

An hilarious and irreverent take on one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, this new show will have you in stitches!
